In the field of medical billing many job opportunities exist. One can work for a doctor’s office, hospital, clinic, or other facility in the medical billing department. Other types of career-related jobs do exist. Insurance companies (payers) employee experienced medical billers to process and review claims submissions. There are opportunities as a medical auditor that would review past claims of a facility and offer feedback for compliance issues. There are also jobs available as a medical billing advocate, which is a lot like a healthcare advocate. They work for a company that provides services to the patient (client) to help reduce their hospital bill. The advocate does this by reviewing claims, medical records, etc. looking for errors, over-charges, tests that may have been cancelled but charged, and other errors. Usually positions in auditing and advocacy will require some experience in the field first. However, because these opportunities do exist, medical billing is a great career field to get into right now. The new healthcare legislation, aging of the baby boomer population, etc. has created a situation where more and more people are accessing healthcare, which creates a demand for more administrative healthcare personnel.

Jobs in Medical Billing – Jobs in Medical Field

The Occupational Outlook Handbook (2014) put out by US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics states that there is an expected growth rate in medical billing of 22%, and the median pay per hour in 2012 was $16.42 per hour. Considering the short training time needed to enter the field, the expected growth rate of the field, and the median annual pay, it’s a good time to train for a job in the medical billing field. Having said that, “median” pay takes into account those at the lower end of the pay spectrum and those at the higher end. So, starting pay probably will not be $16 an hour. However, in my own area of the country, I’ve seen ads for medical billers starting at $14 an hour. So, there is great potential in this field.
